This is the first mid-telephoto macro lens offered by Canon, and includes Image Stabilization (IS) technology. Having a mid-telephoto macro lens with IS can help you shoot handheld in the field, even in lower lit conditions.

IS lenses compensate for camera shake automatically by changing the stops on the camera settings. The IS and autofocus of this lend are done with near-silent Ultra-Sonic Motor (USM) technology, meaning that you won’t disturb the butterflies or insects that you’ll be photographing close up in the field.

The focus of this lens is precise, smooth and deliberate. The background blur, or “bokeh,” is incredibly smooth, with a circular blur due to the lenses’ spherical diaphragm. This lens creates sharp images even at handheld 1/40 shutter speed.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM has an excellent build quality, which is consistent with the “L” series lenses in Canon’s premier line of professional quality lenses.
